Who is Admiral Karambir Singh, PVSM, AVSM, ADC

Admiral Karambir Singh assumed command of the Indian Navy on 31 May 2019 as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff.

Admiral Karambir Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Commissioned into the Indian Navy in July 1980, he earned his wings as a helicopter pilot in 1981 and has flown extensively on the Chetak (Alouette) and Kamov helicopters. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington; College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai and has served as Directing Staff in both these institutions.

In his career spanning over 39 years, he has commanded Indian Coast Guard Ship Chandbibi, Missile Corvette INS Vijaydurg, as well as two Guided Missile Destroyers, INS Rana and INS Delhi. He has also served as the Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet. Ashore, he has served at Naval Headquarters as the Joint Director Naval Air Staff, and as Captain Air and Officer-in-Charge of the Naval Air Station at Mumbai.     

He has also served as member of the Aircrew Instrument Rating and Categorisation Board (AIRCATS).

On promotion to flag rank, the Admiral was appointed as the Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command. His other important flag appointments include Chief of Staff of the Tri-Services Unified Command at Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area (FOMAG).

In the rank of Vice Admiral, he has been Director General Project Seabird, in-charge of infrastructure development of the Navy’s expansive and modern base at Karwar. At the Integrated Headquarters Ministry of Defence (Navy), the Admiral has been the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff and, subsequently, the Vice Chief of Naval Staff. He was the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam, prior taking over helm as the Chief of the Naval Staff on 31 May 19.

The post-independence Indian Air Force owes its independent status to one man, Air Marshal Sir Thomas Walker Elmhirst, who was the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force of Free India. It was Air Marshal Elmhirst, who insisted that the Indian Air Force be an independent service under no control of the Army, unlike previously when the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army exercised control over the Air Force too.

Elmhirst was born in 1895, the fourth son of a Priest. Completing his education from the Royal Naval College, he enrolled into the Royal Navy and took part in World War I. He was involved in many a sea battle and having survived them, he was among the select few of a batch of twenty sailors who formed a Naval Airship Service raised to counter German Submarines. Elmhirst commanded a Naval Air ship between 1915 to 1918, after which he took over command of a the 8th Airship Squadron. In 1919, Elmhirst transferred to the Royal Air Force. He flew seaplanes in the beginning, slowly transferring to flying boats, and bombers.

Who is AIR CHIEF MARSHAL RAKESH KUMAR SINGH BHADAURIA PVSM AVSM VM ADC

Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria PVSM AVSM VM ADC took over as the Chief of the Air Staff on 30 September 2019. An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, he graduated from the Air Force Academy with the coveted ‘Sword of Honour’ and was commissioned in the fighter stream of Indian Air Force on 15 June 1980.

He has over 4270 hours of experience on twenty seven types of fighters as well as transport aircraft and holds the unique distinction of being an Experimental Test Pilot, a Cat 'A' Qualified Flying Instructor and a Pilot Attack Instructor. He completed his Masters in Defence Studies from Command and Staff College, Bangladesh.

During his illustrious career, spanning almost four decades, the Air Chief Marshal has held a number of significant field and staff appointments which include Command of a front line Jaguar Squadron, Command of a premier Air Force Station in South-Western sector, Commanding Officer of Flight Test Squadron at Aircraft & System Testing Establishment and Chief Test Pilot as well as Project Director of National Flight Test Centre on Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project. He was extensively involved in the initial prototype flight testing on the LCA. He has tenanted the appointments of Air Attaché Moscow, Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Projects), Commandant National Defence Academy, Senior Air Staff Officer at Central Air Command, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Air Command and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Training Command. Prior to taking over as the Chief of the Air Staff, he held the appointment of the Vice Chief of the Air Staff.

In recognition of his meritorious service the Air Chief Marshal has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (VM) in 2002, Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2013 and Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM) in 2018. He was appointed as Principal Honorary ADC to the President of India on 01 October 2019.

He is married to Mrs Asha Bhadauria and the couple is blessed with a daughter Sonali and a son Saurav.

Who is George Zhukov

Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov (Russian:  1 December 1896 – 18 June 1974) was a Soviet general and Marshal of the Soviet Union. He also served as Chief of the General Staff, Minister of Defence, and was a member of the Presidium of the Communist Party (later Politburo). During the Second World War, Zhukov oversaw some of the Red Army's most decisive victories.

Born to a poor peasant family from central Russia, Zhukov was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army and fought in the First World War. He served in the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. Gradually rising through the ranks, by 1939 Zhukov was given command of an army group and won a decisive battle over Japanese forces at Khalkhin Gol, for which he won the first of his four Hero of the Soviet Union awards. In February 1941, Zhukov was appointed as chief of the Red Army's General Staff.

Lt Gen SK Saini, an alumnus of Sainik School Kapurthala and NDA, was commissioned into  JAT Regiment  in June 1981. He has commanded his Battalion, a Mountain Brigade, a Counter Insurgency Force in J&K, a Corps in the Western Theatre and the Southern Army.

His staff experience includes tenanting the appointments of Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, GSO1 (Operations) of an Infantry Division and Director Military Operations at the Army HQ.  He has also been BGS of a Corps deployed in J&K, DDG (Strategy) in the Perspective Planning Directorate and DDG KRA Monitoring Cell, COAS Secretariat.  Besides, he has been a weapons instructor in the National Security Guards Training Centre, Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College, New Delhi and Commandant of the Indian Military Academy.  As DG(MP&PS), he initiated many significant refinements in HR polices of all ranks.  In his last appointment as GOC-in-C, he steered transformation of the  Operational Philosophy of the Southern Army to overwhelm the emerging threats and validation of many new concepts during training exercises.

The General Officer is a graduate of the Army Command and Staff Course at the Staff College, Camberley in UK and has studied at the Royal College of Military Science, Shrivenham, UK. He is also a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, Bangladesh, where he authored the best research paper. He holds three Masters Degrees in Defence and Strategic Studies.

The Officer has also served as the Deputy Chief Military Personnel Officer in the UN Mission in Iraq-Kuwait,  attended  an  exercise  on  peacekeeping  conducted  by   the Global Peace Operations Initiative in Mongolia and a counter terrorism exercise in Australia.

Lt Gen Saini has been bestowed a number of awards, both for gallantry and distinguished service, including the “Chief of Army Staff Commendation”, the “Army Commander Commendation”, “Yudh Seva Medal”, “Vishisht Seva Medal”,  “Ati Vishisht Seva Medal” and  "Param Vishisht Seva Medal". He is also the Colonel of the JAT Regiment.

He has written extensively in various journals, magazines and newspapers. He has also presented papers on the “Changing Face of Terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir” during the National Seminar on Non State Armed Groups and India’s Security in 21st Century in April 2008; on the “The Challenges of Combating Terrorism in India” at the National Defence University, Helsinki, Finland in October 2008 and on “Regional Security Cooperation and Confidence Building” at the ASEAN Regional Forum Heads of Defence Universities/Colleges meeting at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in September 2015.

The General officer has held various regimental, staff and instructional appointments. He has successfully tenated prestigious staff appts including Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade in intense Counter Insurgency areas in J&K, GSO-2, Military Intelligence Directorate at IHQ of MoD (Army), Col GS (Military Doctrine) at Army War College, Mhow, BGS (Ops) of a Comd in Western Theatre, ADG Discp & Vigilance, DG LWE & DG DC&W at IHQ of MoD (Army).
